Anna Younes (she/her) is an independent scholar focusing on settler colonial and colonial studies, Race Critical Theories, and psychoanalysis in Europe and currently also in the Dutch Caribbean. Her PhD focused on what she coined the "War on Antisemitism" in her 2015 PhD dissertation, a counterinsurgency war in the footsteps of the War on Drugs and War on Terror. Younes is the recipient of the Emma Goldman Award for her contribution to feminist and social justice scholarship in Europe, has curated Palestinian art and has extensively written about anti-Palestinian repression in Germany. She co-authored a prized documentary on War Journalism, worked as a lay-judge at Berlin's Juvenile Court, and wrote a YouTube series on "Decolonizing the Development and Humanitarian Sector". Younes defines her work through the (anthropological) concept of “researching home” and “researching up to power”. Anna founded and organized the Colloquium of Color in Berlin for several years. Her academic, journalistic and policy work can be found on academia.edu or on this website under “publications” and “consultancies”.

		<description>ANNA&#38;nbsp;
YOUNES

As an aspiring independent researcher and social critic, I welcome the commissioning of pieces to be written for/about you and your work/institution. I am more than interested in expanding my writing (skills) in the rubrics of “book review essays”, “movie reviews” and academic-inspired “public policy papers”. The goal is to work against the eclipsing of “information” with “knowledge” in an age of information overflow and bring back critical academic scrutiny, yet in an accessible writing style and manner.

My angle stems from a critical theory and a radical feminist perspective. In terms of methodology I am firmly rooted in what anthropologists call “researching up to power” as well as “researching home”.
Please view the description of the different categories that I am interested in in the relevant sections below. If you are interested in commissioning a commentary on your/ someone else’s work, or have a special tailored request, please get in touch through the contact page with the title (i.e. “book review essay”) in your headline and some background information for me to get back to you in time.

Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Popular Culture
Love, Desire, Needs, and Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis and Racialization
Gender, Interculturality in Cultural Studies

Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Popular Culture
The course combines key concepts and theoretical frameworks in cultural studies, Critical Race&#38;nbsp;Theory, gender studies, and Post-/Colonial Studies. Students will get to know the canonical texts of&#38;nbsp;Cultural Studies from the USA and learn to evaluate, compare and apply their theoretical scope.

Through this course, students will apply a critical lens to representations of gender, race, and&#38;nbsp;sexuality in popular culture by working through foundational theories in those fields, learning to articulate their arguments as well as apply them to their contemporary world/-s. They will discuss&#38;nbsp;their learned (theoretical) knowledge in class-room discussions around current cultural and political&#38;nbsp;issues, challenging traditional concepts and stereotypes of gender, race, sexuality and coloniality.

This course will allow students the opportunity to:

Learn how gender and race are created as social constructs within “culture”

Learn how both play out in the USA and Germany/Europe as well as elsewhere

Understand how traditional and recent discourses of gender, race, and sexuality inform media&#38;nbsp;representations

Understand and use basic terms and concepts central to this field

Develop the ability to critically evaluate representations of gender, race, and sexuality in&#38;nbsp;different media forms and in different contexts

Engage with and Learn about the different narratives of Cultural Theory in the USA and EU

Methods of Instruction:

This course is structured in a format that combines discussions, group work, presentations, and film&#38;nbsp;screenings. Students will be encouraged to challenge assumptions about race, gender, and&#38;nbsp;sexuality as they are represented in popular culture, society and politics writ-large. Through critical&#38;nbsp;readings of key texts and authors, class discussions and debates, as well as students’ written&#38;nbsp;summaries, the students will enhance their ability to analyze discussions around popular discourse&#38;nbsp;and popular culture.
